Preparing for the JEE/NEET examinations is considered to be one of the toughest preparations to enter the IITs, other engineering colleges and medical colleges (especially the government colleges).

Though the competition is tough, breaking down the preparation and approaching it in a simple way is required. Students tend to commit some mistakes during self study which makes the whole process complicated and tougher.

1.Skipping easy questions

Not practicing a sufficient number of easy questions is very common. Students tend to leave easy questions in modules and booklets thinking they can easily do them. They directly jump to difficult questions but don’t understand that until there is a strong foundation of easy questions, attempting difficult questions is difficult or will take a lot more time.

2.Not reading theory or concepts from books

Students enrolled in offline regular classes also tend to listen to YouTube lectures for difficult topics or if they have not understood the topic properly. It is advisable to read basic theory from books first and then only take help from videos. While listening to lectures online is useful, it might not clarify concepts and may not be the best form of self study. You may also end up with 2-3 different approaches from multiple teachers. Reading theory from books reinforces concepts and teachers generally recommend books that they follow while teaching.

3.Referring to YouTube videos for extra learning

As a lot of content is available online nowadays, students tend to get attracted to free lectures of other famous teachers. Referring to these lectures sometimes is okay but if it becomes a regular habit, it will consume a lot of time and you may not be able to practice sufficient questions from any single source.

4. Searching for tough questions and skipping basic books

It is common for students to think that if they refer to books that have tough questions or advanced concepts such as Olympiad level books or materials, selection will be easier. However, completing the modules from one institute and referring to books that cover basic concepts is sufficient. Around 80 percent questions are covered from these. Only if you have completed these basics for a topic, should you practice from advanced books.

5.Not analyzing mock tests

Once students give mock tests, they tend to forget it. Analyzing and re-attempting difficult questions again is very important. This gives us insight into our topic preparation and helps us define future test strategies.

Avoiding these mistakes during self study and following a basic and simple strategy for your preparation can help in gradually building your level of learning!
